Wax Models for Bronze Casting

Calf Bronze Study

These are wax models that are intended for lost wax bronze casting. Like every journey that begins with a first step, every sculpture begins with a simple beginning. These cows will be assembled into a single sculpture, coated with a special ceramic colloidal suspension, which when dried and the wax burned out, will form a hard mold that will withstand the temperature of molten bronze.

For those who have read about the practice of bronze casting but found it incomprehensible, in the weeks to come, the progress of what will truly become a bovine triptych masterpiece will be displayed and hopefully in a manner where the mystery of wax casting will be revealed. 'Til then you can browse the preceding images and find more details on the ancient, but by no means simple, art of bronze casting.

These wax statues are not the original work. They are in fact casts, made from original clay models. You have to make a mold of the clay models and pour in the wax to get the statues pictured here. Making the molds are somewhat of an art in itself and is best carried out only after receiving proper instruction and taking adequate safety precautions as sometimes the materials are quite hazardous.
