With the wax model mounted on a wax grid (if necessary) and the vents and spurs attached, then begins the dip. You successively dip the wax model in a special ceramic water suspension followed by adding a layer of fine sand. The actual technique depends - some statues can be dipped and then rolled in the sand. Others like this model - have to be dipped and then covered with the sand and the you shake the excess off leaving the sand as the outer layer.
These pictures are of dip #2 and dip #6. As you can see after dip #5 you wrap the model with wire. This adds extra support so if the shell cracks during the pour, all is not lost, and perhaps a bit more grinding and "chasing" of the bronze.
