Lorikeet

Lorikeets are parrots indigenous to New Guinea and Australia. They are, as you might guess, among the most colorful of birds.

However, unlike gorillas - which are pretty much limited to two species - there at least 8 species of lorikeet and some references state there are more than 50 - count 'em - 50. Lorikeets are - to quote some experts - "loud and belligerent" birds and in some places they're actually considered pests.

One surprise is that it seems lorikeets might take as much as is good for them. Or at least at certain times of the year they begin to show signs of taking a dram. They bump into things and get friendly and fly around in strange patterns. No one knows exactly what's going on but the theories range from they get infected with a virus to they eat fruit that's fallen off the trees and has begun to ferment. A similar effect has been noted for elephants.

This painting is rendered in acrylic but after the fasion of John Singer Sargent. That is, it is a portrait with a dark background with the darker shade on one side and a bit lighter on the other. John, by the way, never signed his paintings "John Singer Sargeant" but simply "John S. Sargeant".
