Bronze Casting - Removing Slag

Bronze Casting - Removing Slag

Here we have slag being removed from the molten bronze. The instrument is essentially a thick steel hoe which can skim the impurities off the top. The slag - which is red hot - is then knocked off the rake into a barrel.

The slag comes from using recycle bronze which has some of the ceramic mold shell still clinging to the metal (for details in a new window on what the shell is and how it's made and used, click here).
