Probably the greatest travesty in the history of the Academy Awards was when John Wayne got an Oscar for his campy, hambone portrayal of Rooster Cogburn in "True Grit".
And the second greatest travesty in the history of the Academy Awards was when he didn't get an Oscar for his role shown here; that of the aging and terminally ill gunfighter J. B. Books in "The Shootist".
Now John Wayne fans shouldn't mistake a clinical attitude for criticism. "True Grit" was a fun movie, yes, but none of the acting can be considered even close to Oscar quality. So why did the Duke win? Maybe Glen Campbell was correct when speaking to sportscaster Kurt Gowdy. Glenn told Kurt "I was so bad in 'True Grit' that I made John Wayne look good, and he won the Oscar."
Not exactly a caricature, but the Duke was suprisingly hard to do. He ends up looking like Lyondon Johnson if you're not careful.
