One of the most controversial figures in military history, the study of the Battle of the Little Bighorn is also a study in how history books can tell you more about the historians and their era than who and what they're writing about. In George's case, if one generation of historians say George was a hero, then the next say he was a jerk. We've had about three or four of these cycles and most biographies beginning in the late 1980's aren't quite as tough on George as those in the middle Twenieth Century.
